Building a Village: The Secret to Successful Parenting
We have all heard the expression “It takes a village” meaning a community of people all take part in helping raise our children. Our children are encouraged in different ways by their teachers, neighbors, family friends, and countless other adults who want to see our children thrive.
My hope is that you as a parent are reaching out to your village. Saying that being a parent is hard is a huge understatement! I will never forget when a friend of mine who is very successful came to me and said that getting a masters, running a business, and navigating difficult employee relations has nothing on the stress of being a parent! I am honored that we are in one another’s village!
Who is in your village?
If you are feeling isolated as a parent, maybe it is because you were taught that asking for help is a weakness. Maybe you see other parents struggling and you worry that by reaching out to them you will be bothering them. Although I can empathize with these beliefs, I would like to challenge those thoughts. Humans are social creatures. Part of the reason humans have continued to evolve so quickly is because social connections not only support but enhance survival. By building our parenting village we are enhancing our abilities to parent our children.
This means we become stronger, more educated parents who can continue in hard times because they know they have support!
Isn’t this what we want for our children as well? We want them to be independent and not afraid to go after their dreams. We want our children to know that they have a group of people behind them to root them on and support them when times are hard. None of us need to be alone.
Show your children that connecting with others and asking for help will only make their whole village stronger!
Keep going parents,
Megan
