A Common Tough Conversation Topic: Death

My first children’s book explains the concept of death in a very simplistic way.  It’s a rhyming book featuring Little Moose and Momma Goose. Little Moose hears about death at school which prompts questions for his mother when he gets home. Mother Goose models how to handle tough conversations with children throughout the book.  She stays calm, lets him play, offers comfort, answers his questions, and does not tell him what to feel.  

This book is for all children with no minimum age recommendation. Some parents will choose to read this book to their preschool aged child before they experience the death of a loved one. This can be a great way to introduce the concept of death in an innocent way while emotions are nurtural. While others may not discover this book until after a death has occurred. In these cases, this book can be used to normalize the concept that death is a part of life.  

By being open and talking to your children about death you are giving a message that death does not have to be a scary or taboo subject. You are taking the lead. You are showing your children that they can come to you with questions and receive correct information. You are helping lay a solid foundation for how they may think about death for the rest of their lives.
