Tough Conversations
Tough conversations are opportunities to help your child navigate life challenges.
There are 3 things that I encourage parents to keep in mind before having these conversations:
Avoidance is not an option. This conversation needs to happen. Come back to this point when you feel like giving up. If you tend to avoid tough conversations, you are teaching your child to do the same thing.
Practice saying the things you want to say to your child. When the time comes, it is important for you to try to stay as calm as possible. The more you practice, the easier the words will flow.
Timing is important! Make sure you are both in a good state of mind. Preferably, you know that you both got enough sleep the night before, neither of you are hungry, and are in a location that is comfortable or familiar.
You still may feel uncomfortable while having these conversations, but that is okay. Life is full of times when we feel uncomfortable. If you can show your child that you can brave big feelings, they will be able to do it too.
I am here to help, let's parent the tough stuff together.
